Running Safety

One of the best things about running is the freedom to step out the door and head out for an exhilarating run. But a little forethought is important to keep you running safely and keep your worries to a minimum. Here are a few ideas to consider, and in some places where I have shared links, I get no benefit if you purchase items; I am only sharing things that either I have personally used or I am convinced of their quality.

The most important tip: Make sure someone knows where you are running.

I often make up my route as I go, but it’s good to share the vicinity of your run with someone. If you choose, there are apps that can even track you so your loved one can see your location. Spend some time investigating the features on your GPS watch and apps to learn their capabilities. Below is an example of Garmin LiveTrack from the Garmin Connect app.

If you are running in the dark, make sure you are well-lit. Lighting serves two purposes – for you to SEE and for you to BE SEEN.

There are many good headlights at all price points. This is my current one: Petzl Headlamp but I have also used Energizer brand headlamps. The stronger the lumens, the brighter the lamp. Also consider reflective clothing and reflective or lit armbands.
To be seen, an excellent investment is this Noxgear lighted vest. There is even a pet option if you run with your dog!
Many products are available to help keep runners safe, so do not neglect this important aspect of running.

Run with identification.

It’s easy to slip your ID into a pocket, but a wearable ID is even more convenient. A well known brand, and my personal favorite, is Road ID. You can get your emergency information on a bracelet, shoe tag, watchband attachment or necklace. No one plans on a crisis, but it’s essential that runners carry ID in the event of the unexpected.
I wear the bracelet RoadID; the faceplate holds plenty of information.

Know your surroundings and do not be distracted.

One of the greatest joys of running is forgetting about everything else for a little while. Our thoughts can drift to a million different things, or maybe we are enjoying conversation with a running partner. Enjoy your run, but be attentive to your route, other people, and vehicles. Safety trumps everything else.

I prefer no music when I run outside but if you want to listen to music or your favorite podcast, run either without headphones, with only one headphone, or with specially designed running headphones.

Be prepared. Plan ahead so in the case of something unexpected, you are ready.

There are many products for runners from pepper spray to whistles to alarms, and it’s crucial to carry only what you are comfortable with and would use if necessary. Personally, I run with pepper spray on a hand strap and thankfully, I have not needed to use it. I learned recently that pepper spray expires – its effective diminishes – so take note of the expiration date listed on the canister.
This is the brand and model I’ve used for years: Sabre Red Pepper Spray.
